507111024765000Holistic development is an approach to child development which at the same time covers Physical development, personal, social and emotional development, speech, language and communication, and finally cognitive development. Holistic development is the child’s development “in the round”. When helping children with their holistic development you need to see how each area of development may affect another area of development, for example if a child has a delay in language and communication then this may affect their social and emotional development.
Neurological and brain development in children
New-born babies can recognise faces of familiar people, they can also pull happy and sad expressions depending on how they are feeling. At this age a new-born baby will also be able to recognise their mothers voice because they have got used to it over the 9 months they were in the womb. At about 6 months a baby’s memory develops more. A baby at this age can distinguish the difference between different languages, at the end of the first year they lose thus ability. At the age of one a baby will have a “spike” in their language development, between the age the age of one and two, this is the stage where a child’s language is meant to improve and develop the most. When a child turns two, parts of their brain are becoming fully developed, this means that they can now develop their learning fully, they will be able to do more complex cognitive activities.
