1.Properties and Characteristics
Material properties
Physical properties
a)Strength and durability-The quality of paper is controlled by the following factors which is the quality of the fibers of the paper, the normal length of the fiber, the bonding capacity of the fiber, which is improved by the beating and refining activity, and the structure and arrangement of the sheet.
b)Porosity-Porosity is the capacity of air to move through the sheet of paper. It shows the thickness and separating of the paper fibers forming the sheet. There are two devices accessible for making estimations, the Gurley Densometer and the Sheffeld Porosimeter.

Chemical properties
a)Moisture-The dampness of paper is shown as the proportion of the heaviness of water in the paper to the paper’s weight.
b)pH- pH is a measurement of the acidity of a solution based on its hydrogen ion potential. Paper with low pH levels (acidic) start to deteriorate after 25 years. Alkaline paper (high pH) can last over 200 years.
Material characteristics
The object of this case study was most certainly used for decoration. It is composed of several pieces of different types of paper. The scroll dimensions before treatment was161.8 x 68.9 cm. The paper pieces are white, or off?white, and the inks are predominantly black and red for the two seals.
The decorated surface may be divided in three sections. The first is the main calligraphy part, which reads Bismillah which means ‘in the name of God, the most Graceful and most Merciful’, written with black ink, and shapes a motif that could be considered to be inspired by a dragon. The second is the two red seals, one of which is square and mentions the name of the artist (Kuai Qing), while the other is oval and presents a wish (Wan Gu Chang Chun, which literally means ‘living till thousands of ages as long as a forever spring season’ and can be interpreted as ‘forever young’ or ‘ever?lasting to a long life’). The third section of the decorated surface is a roughly written Arabic inscription, above the seal of the artist: “Written by Abd Eldhayeq which was found at the sea”.
