biggest challenges facing the nation. Over thirty-seven percent of fourth graders in the United States are below proficient reading level (Center for Education Reform, 1). As scores continue to drop in America, the issue of an education reformation is becoming more popular. With the lack of proper education, generations of kids are growing up without the basic, essential knowledge to be able to compete in the workplace. The failure of the nation to adequately educate the students of America has an endless list of negative effects. In the latest Jobs Rated Almanac ranking of the most desirable careers, teaching came in at number 119 out of 250 because of the combination of high stress, low pay and poor working conditions that most people associate with the job (Curriculum Reform, 31). In another survey conducted by the National Commission on Math and Science Teaching in the 21st Century one in four high school math teachers did not even minor in a math (Curriculum Reform, 30). The combination of poorly paid teachers and a lack of reform in the education curriculum in grades K-12 are causing a slow breakdown in our education systems. .
To change this a levy of funds would be needed to support a reform in curriculum as well as more money for teachers. Reforms across America would take over millions of dollars, including a projected time frame of over 10-15 years to see a change in education reform (Curriculum Reform, 30). To make these changes in education takes the two things Americans don’t have: time and money. Many people from the Center for Education point out that this budget needed to create this reform in curriculum is unacceptable and inflated. These figures projected indicate dollars being spent on just reform, inflating the education budget by an extra fourteen percent.
